Towards the end of our last group I became agitated about my inability to grasp the importance of ascertaining the individual meaning of a problem. I could see the value of realizing that a problem arises when one is engaged in invalid thinking but was having difficulty understanding why healing doesn’t happen until the actual thought is identified. It was suggested that I was trying too hard to “figure it out” and that the understanding that I sought would be revealed, eventually, in consciousness. Sure enough, less than 15 minutes later, while driving home on the Saw Mill Parkway and focusing on the harmonious flow of traffic and NOT my question, the answer came in a great AHA!: If we stop at the first question with the general answer- an invalid thought is manifesting, appearing as this problem- we are operating at the level of BELIEF, not understanding. So even if we re-orient to “being here for God”, before identifying the actual thought we are “operating” on belief. Not until the actual thought is revealed does healing occur; after all, it wasn’t really a problem, it was a THOUGHT. The problem vanishes and there is nothing to believe- the principle has once again been proven. Thanks group for your gentle guidance and reminders-
    Marlene

    • Dear Marlene,
A very clear understanding of an often overlooked and misunderstood issue. Your “Aha” helps to clarify the difference between “thoughts” and “awareness.”
Please consider writing this up for the upcoming PAGL conference.

    • Marlene, I am glad you found your way to the clarity of your thought process. Discernment has been for me the most important part of getting to peace. Taking time to understand what the meaning is and what really is in any difficult situation has been really helpful. What I have learned, that is highlighted in this example, is that if you are still in an agitated place you have not discovered the truth about your situation. You are on the way but as Nancy has shared with us, there is no healing until there is understanding of the reason for the specific agitation. I learned the other night that it isn’t enough to have a general understanding of the situation. One needs to have a specific understanding for true healing. The journey continues….

  2. At last night’s dialogue group the following question arose: “Why did Jesus suffer?” Although the word “why” was quickly changed to “what is the meaning. .** . ” the underlying question was still “why?” “Why?” approaches the issue looking for a cause or a reason – some ultimate purpose. Many religions believe that “Jesus suffered and died for our sins.” From a Metaview, to determine “why” or “the meaning” of Jesus’ suffering would be speculating on something we cannot know. We can ask, “What can I learn from Jesus’ life?” and “What does seeing “suffering” in his life mean to me?”

To think that Jesus suffered, and that that suffering benefits us is invalid. That would imply that suffering has a purpose, and it would mean that Jesus had personal power to heal. Jesus himself always acknowledged that it is God who heals – not he. And, the only good in suffering is to heal from it by waking up from it.

** Go to “Notes” under “What is a MetaView?” for more clarification

  3. Good post on a subject that is complex. When we suffer our first reaction is often, “what did I do to bring this on?” or “what can I do to relieve this suffering?”. When you put your life in God’s hands you are relieved of these types of reactions. That is clearly what Jesus did. A great lesson. By the way, for those interested in Jesus and his suffering. My husband and I are going to a lecture on March 7 in NYC. I thought you might want to know about it: It is called “The Trial of Jesus” and it takes place at the Kay Playhouse at Hunter College at 6:30PM. Jacket and tie required for men. It is free and first come first serve. Here is the web address to get more information: http://www.firstthings.com/blogs/firstthoughts/2010/01/14/ft-erasmus-lecture-march-7-2010/

    • Janice,
Good clarification. We can even understand what it means to “put our lives in God’s hands” more specifically: instead of putting our attention toward relieving our suffering, seekers seek to see the situation from a broader, more elevated view; first understanding that when we see and/or experience suffering we are seeing our conditioned reaction to the situation. Once this is recognized, we can turn our attention to being open to seeing as “God sees, and with sufficient sincerity and reverence, an inspired idea and/or insight might occur.

For example, Jesus, when he saw someone who was afflicted with some condition did not pity or reject – he saw a need for love and understanding of our true nature and he saw with such clarity that the individual received a glimpse of his/her own true nature, and thus the affliction disappeared.

Thanks for the “heads-up” on the lecture for March 7 – it looks interesting – but I will be in Calif. at my niece’s wedding, so if you go, please tell me all about it.

  4. I’d like to share an understanding that i received this morning while listening in stillness. Although I wasn’t consciously thinking about last evening’s tele-seminar “Beyond Money” it was obviously in my consciousness. After the phone conference last night I emailed Nancy the comment that I liked how she began with the idea that the conference wasn’t really “free”that we are actually paying, and after some questioning, the group realized that what we were paying was “attention”. This idea led to some discussion about what attention is., and how ultimately it is the equivalent of love. That’s the background: so this morning, after thinking about world hunger a bit, I sat listening and my mind started to wander back to the mundane (what time was i to meet my friend for lunch?). I then heard a very clear, “Pay Attention”, and i was jolted back to Dr Hora’s definition of meditation:”Wholehearted attentiveness to what God wants (is) motivated by a sincere interest in committing to being here for God.” That was followed immediately by the idea, “Our true currency is attention (love).” Now I understood the profound truth the Beetles tried to remind us of, “All we need is Love”. There can never be lack when we know that real currency is love, and love, like air, is everywhere and absolutely free. So as i sit in stillness, as anyone sits listening wholeheartedly, a micro-war on poverty is taking place peacefully. That is all that can be done to heal the problem.

(Also was amused by the multiple meanings of the word “currency”-. money, flow, and now.)

Thanks again, Nancy, for your inspiring work to share such truth.
    Namaste, Marlene
